To Build An Owl Box

Owls play a vital role in our ecosystems; however, the area of suitable habitat has continued to decline as more space is taken for crops and recreation. To encourage the growth of the 5 species that make up the UK owl population, there are a few things we can do:

  • HABITAT - Understanding the elements that make up a habitat for these successful hunters is vital. Owls can be found in Deciduous or Coniferous woodlands and corridors. As the name suggests, barn owls can find themselves quite comfortable in the shelter of a barn or undercover structure.

  • FOOD SOURCE - Owls’ diet mainly consists of small rodents and insects. So, how do you stock a pantry for an owl? Well, a simple solution is to let the grass grow; this can be a verge, patches, or you could even mow a maze, as long as there is enough cover to create habitats for creatures like field mice and moths. Field mice will feed on the seeds that grow, and moths will use the cover to grow as pupae.

  • PATIENCE - With a little luck, an owl will cruise silently past your owl box and note it as a suitable new home. Generally, they prefer holes at elevations exceeding 3m (10ft). Even after finding a nesting box, owls can take as long as 2 years to fully settle and begin breeding from their new home.
